We are thrilled to have Michel Bruyere as our headline performer at this year’s festival as we pay a unique cultural tribute to our country's First Nations. Michel is a Native American storyteller & full-time musician from the Anishnaabe (Ojibwe) tribe.  He is the touring drummer for Buffy Sainte-Marie.  He specializes in the North American Indian's first instruments, The Big Drum, as well as the Woodlands & Plains Flute. Michel performs on Saturday and Sunday.

** Let The Children Play is a FREE, family-fun event at this year’s Muhtadi International Drumming Festival. Children of all ages are invited to join us to play various percussion instruments. They can play percussion instruments provided by us, bring their own, or have fun with us creating new ones from everyday materials. There will be lots of prizes and gifts for all participants.

Edz Gyamfi BIO:

Edz brings forth a fresh uniqueness and level of creativity to Hip Hop instructi
­on. He focuses on the history, foundatio­ns and technique req­uired to establishing a strong hip hop dancer prior to hitti­ng the choreography aspect of the dance style. His unparalle­led style of hip hop incorporates traces of Dancehall,Afro Beats and House (just to name a few) .
Edz is a three time full dance scholarsh
­ip recipient at OIP Dance Centre (Toront­o). Edz has received vigorous training at OIP (Toronto) and BDC (New York City). In addition, he was recently in Motivat­ing Excellence- Inte­nsive Program series with world renowned choreographer Rhaps­ody James.
 Edz has also recent
­ly completed the Fre­shmen&  Sophomore In­tensive program ran by world renowned ch­oreographer Luam Kef­lezgy called Rock the Industry in NYC.
Edz has worked with some of the most ren
­owned hip hop choreo­graphers and perform­ers in the Canadian Music scene including Danny Davalos, Lat­oya Robinson, Ryan Scheel & Esie Mensah.

Jermaine Clarke aka Astro Mega is an energetic versatile producer, who is inspired by various influences from jazz music to old school Hip Hop to horror movies.  Astro Mega started producing and working with singers, MC’s and poets by the age of 16.

 

In 2011, he released a collaborated album “Class of ‘93” produced and arranged by Astro Mega. In 2012, Astro Mega released three projects the solo album “Awesome”, a collaborated album “Project- GHP is like” an instrumental album titled “Megamentals Vol 1”. On the same album "Awesome" Astro Mega produced the critically acclaimed “Soul Runner” “Soul Runner” won best Canadian Song of the year for 2013 recognized by The Plug FKA Backroad Radio and college radio station CHRY.

 

  In 2014 Astro Mega and NewBreedM  collaborated for the successful underground single “CrossRoads” part of NewBreedMC’s mixtape titled "Your Mom Likes My Mixtape" CrossRoads” features Toronto producer showing his vision and creativity Astro Mega was also the director of the inspiring video for the single. “CrossRoads” spent many weeks on the Hip Hop Canada feature charts.

 

 In 2013 Astro Mega was fortunate to tour across Canada with iconic Hip Hop MC Masta Ace and the GrindHouse Project on “The son of Yvonne Tour”.

 

In the fall of 2014 circulated “Solar Excursions”, in 2015 Astro Mega released the instrumental version of “Solar Excursions” and his anticipated project “Fast Black”.

 

When asked about his goals and ambitions on production that inspires people

Astro stated, “When it comes to sampling, I’m like a kid with a brand new

Lego set,” he says. “I play with samples like kids play with toys. I dive right

in and don’t care when it comes to reading the instructions.”

Tamla Matthews is a professional artist and arts administrator, educator and entrepreneur with an expertise in cultural arts and a passion for building art based communities. Tamla is the Executive Director Of Drum Artz Canada, Director Of the Roots And Branches Children's Dance and the Artistic Director Of the Caribbean Dance Theatre Company. Passionate, driven and always up for a good laugh, Tamla can often be found in a throng of children and insists that the role of the arts is to Celebrate life, build community and maximize human potential.

Roots& Branches

Roots and Branches is a multi-genre dance program for youth and children located in the

Malvern Community, that specializes in preserving and celebrating the dances of African, Caribbean and Canadian Diasporas. The group has won many performing awards, including the junior Folklore Festival 2015 Most Outstanding Performing Dance Company, Best Soca/Calypso Group 12 and under and 2015 Most Entertaining Group. Roots and Branches is supported by the Toronto Arts Council in partnership with the Scarborough Caribbean Youth Dance Ensemble.

Michael Rulentlez, known as Rulentlez aka BoyAstro, born & raised in Toronto. With over 16 years of industry experience, 6 years of teaching (TDSB), stage performing, music videos, acrobatics, martial arts, Latin dance & many others. With a background in Early Childhood Education, extensive experience volunteering for youth functions & instructing youth adolescents for the past 6 years; He is well equipped and continues to share his knowledge of dance with the people he has the opportunity to teach. Performing across Ontario and internationally doing shows to inspire youth; He teaches workshops for all ages on hip hop & break dance, turntablism and the creation of movement.
